Coming of age in 1985, Pavel and his two best friends Lee and Gooch live for San Francisco’s thrash metal and punk rock scene. Good grades aren’t difficult for Pavel, so he’d rather go to hardcore shows and fish with his buddies than do homework or prepare for college. But high school’s almost over, and he’s smart enough to know it’s time to make hard choices. Pavel has drive, he’s just not sure where to drive.
Although his Mom’s a small-time pot dealer, he’s never smoked weed. He’d rather run the beach for miles with his girlfriend Larissa, a Mormon who’s been prepared for college since the second grade. Torn between the arts and a corporate paycheck, if only he had Lee’s confidence or Gooch’s rich parents, maybe his path would be clear. But nothing could prepare Pavel for the cataclysmic events coinciding with high school graduation.

I feel the need to fully disclose two items. One, I grew up in Northern California, in the 80’s, spending the first twenty years of my life there. That could make one bias in reading a book called Norcal that takes place in the 80’s. Which leads me to my second disclosure. I am a professional screenwriter who also teaches at UCLA in the MFA Screenwriting Program. So yes, I’m biased because of the setting of this book, but also pretty damn particular in regards to what I think is good writing. This I know for sure. Sean Finnegan is a damn good writer. He’s managed to create something specific and unique, yet make it extremely relatable. It doesn’t matter where you grew up or in what part of the world, you grew up, you formed deep relationships, you suffered loss, you persevered. What human hasn’t? I have found that any good story is about one of these seven universal struggles. Justice, Truth, Full Potential, Identity, Responsibility, Healing, and Love. This author has eloquently tackled not one, but all of these struggles in this lovely opus of a young man’s life growing up in Northern California. I am both impressed, and a bit jealous to be frank. That is no easy feat. With that said, what resonated with me the most was just how spiritual this book is. Spirituality pumps through the veins of every chapter. None of it is heavy handed, but the notion of a “higher power” drives this story, yet stays just inside your blind spot. I appreciate and respect the subtlety. Mr. Finnegan has something to say but instead of screaming at you, he chooses to whisper, forcing his reader to lean in. I was grateful that I did. I highly encourage others to do the same. Great book.Product details

NorCal edition by Sean Finnegan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Sean Finnegan is a stunning writer with an unprecedented way with words. Through a very poetic and gentle voice he writes a deep and meaningful story that inspires profound emotions. The multifaceted layers in this story mesmerized me and I was constantly intrigued.
I laughed, I cried, I worried, I connected….I was captivated all throughout this tale. Each chapter felt like a mini story, standing all on its own; enticing me to want more and nurturing a bond with the characters and their experiences. I felt as if I witnessed the journey as a silent friend that loved each of the characters in a different way. Sean has sheer talent with creating extraordinary character development.
I have grown to love sweet Pavel, his unique wisdom, courage, depth and intestinal fortitude that he embraces at such a young age.
Lee is the intense, hot guy in High School that I would have wanted to save from his own pain. Gooch is everyone’s friend… funny, loyal and an all around great guy.
I highly recommend Sean Finnegan’s book Nor-Cal to readers of all ages. It is a truly unique, and unforgettable narrative that is worthy of several reads.Bravo!
I bought this book because I thought it would be fun to read a book written by someone who I met as a kid, and was rewarded with a really well written coming of age story about a kid growing up in Northern California in the mid-80’s. With references to metal bands, fishing, the lost coast, Humboldt County, the SF 49ers, and my favorite Chinese restaurant, (The House of Nanking), it was a delightful walk down memory lane. It is a sort of “Cather in the Rye” for someone who grew up in Northern California in the mid-80’s. For those who didn’t, it’s a great story that describes the natural beauty of Nor-Cal in an almost mystical way. I’m not a good book critic, but I can only say that I found myself thinking quite a bit about Pavel and the other characters while I was reading the book and since. For me, the impact of a book and the quality of a story can be measured by how often I think about the characters. I am really looking forward to the next book by this author. Whether you grew up in Nor-Cal or not, this book is definitely worth a read. I highly recommend it!
As a child of the 80s, raised in suburban Ohio and later, Florida, the intrigue of discovering how "real" city kids, like from Manhattan or San Fran, stoked my imaginative fires. However, Nor-Cal proves that not all that glitters is gold, and Finnegan has managed to craft a story that reads intimately like a memoir, exposing the dangers and downfalls of urban teen culture. This is a page-turner, not only because of its endearing characters, effervescent dialogue and steady pace, but also due to the anticipation of the narrator's sprinkling of ruminations about life which leaves you either shaking your head in agreement, laughing out loud or feeling sheepish with embarrassment, highlighting that we are all human and fallible, yet gorgeous in our collective humility.
Because we are of the same era,Finnegan' s story stirs within me poignant memories from childhood, some from pop culture but others from how our generation of parents interacted with their children. If Nor-Cal teaches a lesson, then it is that we are never our circumstances. As long as we draw breath, it is not too late to improve our station as human beings, either on the practical or spiritual realm of existence.
I've never read such an honest, insightful coming-of-age story. I was really rather blown away by it. The main character is a young man named Pavel and the story begins in 1985, when Pavel is a senior in high school in Northern California. Written in first person narrative, Pavel takes us through his very interesting and unconventional (though totally believable) life and history as he faces an uncertain future. What really struck me about this book is the frank honesty with which it's told. There are no cliches in here, no dark bitterness, no cookie-cutter characters. The story not only moves well and has a lot of interesting twists, but it also feels authentic. There's some graphic sexuality here that comes across as charming rather than gratuitous because it's so real. I also liked that the story retains a strong sense of hope, even when Pavel experiences hurts and losses in his life. A really excellent book that kept me reading, and had me thinking about the characters afterward.
